St. Louis – Calgary 2010
November 11, 2010
This is the St. Louis. It used to be a “seedy” bar and was Ralph Klein’s watering hole according to some sources. There aren’t too many buildings left in this area; This is where Calgary’s East Village re-development project is going to lie. Most of these buildings are from the early 1900′s including the Geological building across the street. I wanted to get a photograph of the stonework of the Geological building but the lighting wasn’t too good facing that way. I’m quite happy with the negative of this image and I’m definitely going to run some prints in the darkroom. Hopefully I’ll get my hands on some paper larger than 8×10 soon and try my hand at some “trough” printing. Maybe I’ll print it at about 20×24 inches?
This jaunt had the goal of getting some photographs of The King Eddy, another building in this area (only a block south from the St. Louis). Unfortunately there’s so much construction around it that it was tough to get a good angle of the front. There’s also a large expanse of nothing to the east of the building where everything has been ripped down. I’m going to revisit this site on another date to figure out what to do about the construction and desolation surrounding it. I think the best time to photograph The King Eddy would be in the early morning. That way the light isn’t facing straight at the building’s front and there would be some nice shadows casted by the sign.
