Calgary Architecture: IBM on 11th

May 14, 2011

Unfortunately I’m a little unversed in architectural terminology.  Back in art history we learned about flying buttresses and keystones but contemporary architecture was breezed over in art history.  I have an interest in buildings because they are built by people for people.  It could almost be considered a humanistic interest.  Can the ideas of the new topographics be combined with humanist photography?  I don’t know.

I’m not a huge fan of the 3:2/4:6 aspect ratio.  I feel the 8×10 ratio is much better suited to architectural work when photographing individual buildings.  My glasses also introduce a problem when viewing thr0ugh an SLR viewfinder.  They limit the view and I have to pan my head around to check the corners.  I end up with the odd botched photograph due to this when I’m not able to wear contact lenses.  When I shot this photo I ignored the bottom of the frame and imagined an 8×20 crop when taking the picture.  It was good to be conciously aware of the final result I wanted of this picture.  I also “imagined” the photograph in greyscale values which is another thing I’ve been getting better at.

Shot on a Canon 5D with a Zeiss 35mm T*.  Little bit of burning in Lightroom.
